Denis Dyack, a video game industry veteran of 30 years and AWS Hero, is the Founder and CEO of Apocalypse, a cloud-first game development studio. Currently working on Deadhaus Sonata, a Narrative Driven Action RPG where you play the Undead fighting the living.

Denis created and led an unprecedented string of video game hits such as Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem, and Metal Gear: Solid Twin Snakes. A Canadian Game Developers Hall of Fame inductee, Denis was awarded the Outstanding Achievement in Character or Story Development by the AIAS for Eternal Darkness. A firm believer in ties between academia and industry, Denis served on several advisory boards such as MIT, University of Waterloo, Sheridan College, Wilfred Laurier University, Brock University, McMaster University, and many others.

Denis has a B. in Physical Education, H. BSc in Computer Science, M. Sc in Computer Science. A recent graduate from Miskatonic University, with full honours in Quantum Theory, believing one can never be educated enough to deal with the unknown.

In the classical era of entertainment, Greek plays took place in amphitheatres, which allowed the audience to interact with actors. In that open-air venue, those being entertained were given a say in what they watched. Indeed, the audience could decide whether a character would live or die with the classic “Thumbs up or Thumbs Down.” This type of agency for the audience was limited to being in person, until now.

Today, more people watch an e-sport championship game via Twitch than they do the Superbowl, changing the medium of video games as we know it. Streaming technology has rapidly transformed the way we consume content, and the industry is still catching up as developers, publishers and platforms try to understand this new paradigm.

Gameplay: Death systems for the Undead?

The death system in Deadhaus Sonata™ was designed to be consistent and philosophically aligned with occult literature.

One cannot simply kill a spirit without going through the proper rituals of exorcising that spirit. Examples of this philosophy can be seen in excellent shows like Supernatural, where the remains of a ghost need to be burned or destroyed to completely remove the entity from the realm of the living, or in Dungeons and Dragons, where the phylactery of a Liche needs to be destroyed before it can truly be put to rest, and echoed throughout occult literature.

A long tradition of necromancy (the magick for raising and communicating with the dead) posits that death and life are not binary states, but rather a smooth and permeable continuum along which many beings can wander.

Studying the schools of thought around the Sacred Trinity is wise. Indeed, the physical, the magickal, and the essential are a worthy foundation to build upon, but this is not the path I exhort. Many are those who assault my character as being solely driven by hatred, and although I will not deny that hatred exists within me, I believe it is misguided to dismiss my philosophy as mere rhetoric.

Hear me. We are in a time where everyone lies. Layer upon layer of deception compounds the consciousness to the point where there are so many mistruths that the average individual cannot deal with the cognitive weight of the deception and eventually succumbs to despair and tyranny. There is no hope for the truth has been lost.

Follow me and let the truth be a weapon. We will cut through the lies and show them the way.
